The United Republic of Tanzania has experienced major crises in the tourism industry since the years before independence up to the present time. For instance, the collapse of the previous East African Community (EAC) in 1977 led to the closure of the border with the neighboring country of Kenya, which impacted the tourism industry tremendously. Since EAC was a union of three countries (Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda), the border closure hurt tourism both in Tanzania and Uganda because Kenya oversaw tourism affairs for EAC. This problem was exacerbated when war broke out between Tanzania and Uganda that lasted two years. However, since the mid-1980s, the Tanzanian government in collaboration with private sectors, have transformed the tourism industry to become one of the major economic sectors in the country. More recently, Tanzania has witnessed a global crisis which brought the tourism industry to its knees following the breakout of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This pandemic has seriously impacted the tourism and hospitality industry all over the world. This thesis discusses the impacts of COVID-19 in the Tanzanian tourism industry and the approaches that the Tanzanian government and other stakeholders have taken to rescue this industry from total collapse. Additionally, the study analyzes previous crises that Tanzania has endured, which were mainly influenced by the adaptation of socialism and self-reliance policy, collapse of former EAC, and the war between Tanzania and Uganda. This study discusses the strategies that the Tanzanian government took to rescue the industry, such as trade liberalization and changing tourism policies.
