Many American women struggle to engage in sufficient daily exercise. Despite many women expressing a desire to become more active, the majority of women are still not meeting exercise guidelines. The effects of participation in online fitness groups on the current physical activity levels of adult women was examined in this study, which ran for 28 days, across four phases. The participants self-reported their activity on a data sheet for all 28 days. Phase 1 of the study collected baseline data. Phase 2 of the study introduced the independent variable. Phase 3 of the study removed the independent variable. The final phase, Phase 4 reintroduced the independent variable. The results of each phase were compared through a the repeated measures ANOVA and it was found that the result were statistically significant [F(3, 93) = 3.616, p = .016]. Statistically significant differences in level of exercise between Phase 2 and 3 (p = 0.01) and between Phases 2 and 4 (p = 0.04) demonstrated that being part of a social media group with the opportunity to post about exercise increased the number of minutes of exercise compared to the phases when posting was disabled. These results may demonstrate that individuals can use social media as a tool to increase regular exercise.
