This study used a three-group crossover experimental design to examine the acute effects of static stretching and a lacrosse ball self-myofascial release (SMR) on hamstring flexibility. The three testing groups were: warm-up followed by static stretching (WS), warm-up followed by lacrosse ball SMR (WL), and warm-up only (WU). Data were collected during the Spring of 2022, from 31 college students who participated and received all three treatments, with one week in between each treatment. The researcher also examined the order of treatment presentation to determine if there were any carryover effects from previous treatments.A two-way mixed ANOVA was conducted to examine statistical differences between the flexibility scores for the three groups. The main effect of treatment on hamstring flexibility was statistically significant between groups [F(2, 30) = 16.19, p < .001, ηp2 = .366], indicating that there was a statistical difference between at least one of the treatment groups. Post hoc multiple comparisons tests determined that there was a significant difference between the WU and WS groups, p < .001, 95% CI = [-3.38, -1.10], no significant differences between the WU and WL groups, p < .245, 95% CI = [-1.74, .30], and a significant difference between the WS and WL groups, p < .001, 95% CI = [.62, 2.43].Results indicated that the WS treatment (M = 28.984) resulted in significantly larger acute hamstring flexibility measurements than both the WL (M = 27.452) and WU (M = 26.774) treatments, but that there were no statistically significant differences between the WL and WU groups. Results also indicated that the order of treatment presentation did not impact the treatment results.
