Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Academic Roles, Identities and Career Frameworks -- Chapter 3: Career Frameworks and Development: The Individual Perspective -- Chapter 4: New Pathways in Redesigned Academic Career Frameworks -- Chapter 5: Career Frameworks and Development: The Institutional Context -- Chapter 6: Guidelines for Pathway Redesign and Implementation -- Chapter 7: Provisional Wrap-Up and an Invitation to Continue the Academic Pathways Conversation.
This book spotlights new pathways for academic career progression beyond the traditional teaching-and-research model. It sets out key parameters for constructive conversations about alignment to these new pathways, which are examined from the point of view of individuals at different stages in their careers, as well as at an institutional level. The authors offer guidance on how to implement new pathways and how to realign professional development for academics so that the new pathways fully achieve their purpose to support universities' contribution to society. The volume will appeal to academics in higher education, as well as those involved in the redesign and implementation of academic career frameworks from a variety of positions in a university. Mark Sterling is Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Staffing) and Beale Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham, UK. Lia Blaj-Ward is Associate Professor (Teaching and Scholarship) at Nottingham Trent University, UK. Rosalind Simpson is the former Director of Human Resources at the University of Lincoln, UK. Karin Crawford is Senior Lecturer at the Lincoln Academy of Learning and Teaching (LALT), University of Lincoln, UK.
