This report deals with part of a research pro-grannie in which the behaviour of joints in machine tool structures is analysed and practically tested. The investigation is in two sections(i) The study of the static and dynamic stiffness of joints subjected to a loading in the plane normal to the joint surface.(ii) Investigations into the stiffness of flange and column connections. In part (i) tests were conducted on specimens of various apparent areas of contact in order to verify the relationshipLog P = m λj. + cA test rig is described which was designed to study the stiffness and damping capacity of joints subjected to static and dynamic forces acting in a direction normal to the interface surface.Joint specimens in both cast iron and mild steel were manufactured and tested and compared with equivalent solid specimens in each material.Three forms of surface finish for each material were investigated, i.e. shaped, peripheral ground and scraped. For each surface condition dry and lubricated surfaces were tested at various static preloads, with a dynamic force at different frequencies superimposed upon then. The effect of viscosity of the lubricant was shown to have a marked effect both upon stiffness and damping. Similar to the static test it could he con- eluded that the preload is the main parameter and that the stiffness is very much dependent upon it. The higher the preload the higher the stiffness, but increase in stiffness is accompanied by a decrease in damping capacity.Bonding of the joint faces was also shown to have certain advantages both upon stiffness and damping. In part (ii) investigations were carried out into the effect of flange design and bolt pocket constructions upon the stiffness and deformations of flange connections subjected to tensile and bending forces, bolt preload being found to be the important parameter considered.Column fixations and effect of bolt configurations were studied with the aid of a reduced scale column model fabricated in mild steel. Again, bolt preload and stiffness as well as the change in position of the pivot line were studied. The results of the experiments showed(a) that the stiffness of a column or flange connection may be greatly influenced by the design of the flange and the bolt configuration;(b) that the initial preload in a bolt and hence initial preloading pressure on a joint face has a direct bearing' on the joint.
