DDS is a middleware standard for data-centric publish/subscribe communication to support real-time communication without broker. DDS provides a discovery service and 21 different types of QoS policies to participants for securing scalability, interoperability, and reliability for communication in a domain network. However, the features of DDS impose an inevitable burden of prerequisite work that limits available resources, making DDS hard to be adopted under a resource-constraint environment.Existing work introduces a configurable DDS model for improved interoperability and adoptability on diverse devices. However, the existing work fails to address high traffic problems in communication. This research introduces broker-embedded Data Distribution Service (b-DDS), a novel approach to improve the adoptability of DDS by adopting the notion of broker without compromising the advantages of DDS. Brokers are responsible for forwarding messages between different domain areas, managing dynamic discovery, and configuring communication. The research first defines a broker entity model by extending existing entities in the service model and transport layer model of DDS. The model is implemented based on MQTT and evaluated by applying it to a pedestrian safety system in the V2X domain for adoptability and efficiency in a controlled environment.
