The rising popularity of large language models and other forms of artificial intelligence has influenced researchers to explore their reliability and applications in large hardware and software systems. Motivated by this context, this thesis will evaluate the performance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT 3.5 which encompasses prompt engineering, code summarization, bug detection, and code repair. The primary focus of this project is targeting Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) software vulnerabilities, and investigating ChatGPT 3.5’s abilities to localize CWE bugs, respond diversely, and provide effective solutions with minimal provided context. The study demonstrates that ChatGPT is capable of effectively detecting and localizing CWE vulnerabilities, but fails to provide a diverse range of fix methods that adheres to the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad.
