Potato is the sixth largest crop harvested in the United States. Potato diseases cost billions of dollars to the US and worldwide potato industry. Continuous reports on soilborne diseases and the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria call for developing novel techniques that decrease disease while assuring the environment’s safety. Bacteriophage endolysins are highly active antibacterial peptidoglycan hydrolases that have evolved over millions of years to become the ultimate weapon against bacteria, potentially used as therapeutics. Among potatoes’ significant soilborne bacterial diseases is common scab, a Gram-positive Streptomyces spp. There are no efficacious pesticides or soil fumigants for treating this disease. In this study, we used bioinformatics to screen large databases and identified seven endolysin proteins from Streptomyces spp. These endolysins are promising candidates that could be used to eliminate common scab bacterial pathogens in potatoes specifically. The seven endolysin proteins identified are: AYD86781.1 LysM-like endolysin Streptomyces phage Microdon; QPL14064.1 endolysin Streptomyces phage TurkishDelight; AWN05104.1 endolysin Streptomyces phage FlowerPower; YP 009615350.1 endolysin Streptomyces phage Scap1; AWN05870.1 hydrolase Streptomyces phage Rainydai; QJD53688.1 endolysin Streptomyces phage Kela; and QAX92944.1 LysM-like endolysin Streptomyces phage WheeHeim. These are phage lytic proteins, an advanced class of novel enzyme-based antibiotics. A growing community of researchers develops phage lytic proteins with the perspective of their use as antibiotics.
