Organizational culture is complex and multifaceted. The intention of this study was to explore the organizational culture of the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital (QE II) in Grande Prairie, Alberta between September and November 2002. A comprehensive literature review of the concepts of organizational culture, employee experience and leadership provide a framework from which to view the research in this study. Seven tape-recorded interviews were conducted which included four women and three men and focused on the employee experience related to organizational culture. The research methodology selected was interpretive paradigm, where the researcher becomes an instrument interested in the participants understanding and meaning related to the current issue. Interpretive research is qualitative, naturalistic and interpretive. Naturalistic, meaning the research was conducted within the participant's context and interpretive because the data was viewed through the researchers assumptions, biases and mental models. The specific form of interpretive research chosen was action research. The interview questions were open ended and developed based on an appreciative inquiry philosophy. Six themes emerged from the data, leadership, employee experience, information sharing, systems thinking, learning and celebrations. From these themes three key findings emerged which became the framework for the recommendations they included identity, relationship/community and information sharing.
