The environmental impact and the operational economy of systems such as the gas turbine engines is a major and a growing concern across the globe. As the demand for the systems like aircrafts employing the gas turbine increases, and advances are made in enhancement of the capabilities of such systems, it becomes increasingly important to push towards better efficiencies while catering these needs. Higher operating temperatures are essential in obtaining better efficiencies and also to meet the higher power demands. This however, exposes the components to harsh environments. The material limitations of such components however, prove to be a hurdle in achieving this objective. Therefore, the components need to be cooled efficiently to protect them for safe operation of the engine. In a gas turbine engine, between 20-30% of the core inlet air is bled off after compression, which imposes a performance penalty on the engine. It is therefore necessary to use this air economically and improve the performance of the cooling arrangements utilizing this cooling air.A gas turbine consists of rotating components like the gas turbine disk which support the blades mounted on it circumferentially and transfer power to the drive shaft. This disk is also subjected to ingress of hot turbine gases. Jet impingement is and effective way to cool these disks and also counter the ingress problem. In addition to gas turbine engines, rotating surfaces are encountered in many other systems like rotary heat exchangers, automobile components, etc., where better thermal efficiencies and thermal management play a key role from safety as well as economic perspective. Since rotating surfaces encounter flow structures different that stationary surfaces, it is essential to conduct investigations under rotating conditions.The present study aims at improving the heat transfer performance of rotating disks under jet impingement by introducing extended surfaces like pins and ribs on the surfaces. The primary objective of this work is to investigate the impact of various factors such as the rotational speed, dimensions and shape of the features, characteristics of the impinging jet, impingement location and angles of impingement. This investigation also aims at creating a pool of data to serve as the foundation for further investigation by the community. Experimental and computational studies have been conducted to present a detailed analysis of the heat transfer characteristics and understand some fundamental differences between heat transfer involving stationary and rotating surfaces.
