This dissertation is an exercise in theory building that explores container form, function, and distribution. Using ethnographic data, environmental reconstructions, and archaeological information, containers are examined within the framework of the container complex, the group of containers used within a system. This patterning is examined on three scales. First, broad scale functional categories are explored. Then, building on these findings, an example of a container complex is examined. Finally, a detailed study of a single container type is viewed in light of both the ethnographic patterning and archaeological evidence. Previous studies on containers have focused on individual artifact types, especially pottery. Although these studies provide important information on the artifact types including construction, composition, and in some cases, use, they do not address container function within a system and do not develop overarching patterns of container use. The patterning identified in this study provides the first step in theory building by detailing thresholds of container use and variability. The result is a better understanding of the role of containers and several models of container use that can then be applied to the archaelogical record.
