As carbon emissions continue to rise, efforts have increased to properly quantify carbon sources and sinks in response to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. Some major carbon sinks, like lakes and blue carbon environments, have seen massive efforts undergone to quantify their role in the global carbon cycle. Others, like reservoirs, have been chronically understudied and poorly accounted for as carbon sequestration environments. Using precise and rigorous 210Pb geochronologies, we calculated carbon burial rates at eight locations within Falls Lake, a reservoir in North Carolina. These values ranged from 42 g C m-2y-1 to 1139 g C m-2y-1 with a mean of 313 g C m-2y-1. These values are comparable to carbon accumulation rates reported in blue carbon environments and demonstrate the high potential of reservoirs as an effective yet overlooked carbon sequestration environment.
