Despite deforestation rates being the highest for the last fifteen years, the case of mainland Southeast Asia and its preferred policy of logging bans in preserving its forests remains to be examined. I address this gap by gauging the impact of the unprecedented series of logging and wood trade bans Laos and Vietnam imposed from 2012 to 2016. Leveraging on fine satellite data and the differential timing of these policies, I estimate causal impacts in the Northern Annamite rainforests through a spatial regression discontinuity design akin to Burgess, Costa, and Olken (2018) and found that while there are substantial declines in differential deforestation at the border that coincide with the nationwide enforcement of these conservation policies, more forest loss is observed when Laos relaxed its regulations. These impacts are more distinct within pixels where access to local markets and enforcement pressures are higher, on average. While there is simultaneous implementation on both sides of the border, I document evidence that the sharp drop in forest loss between 2015 and 2016 is mainly due to the Vietnamese logging ban implemented three years after Laos. My findings emphasize the effectiveness of synergistic national environmental regulations to deter deforestation, even within remotest areas.
