Natural flow regimes shape aquatic ecosystems and the communities that persist in them. Human modifications to the landscape have already altered flow regimes around the world and anthropogenic climate change is predicted to further alter flow regimes. As the intensity and duration of drying associated with intermittency is predicted to increase across the southeastern United States, it is critical to understand how local fish communities naturally differ between intermittent and perennial flow regimes to properly conserve regional communities. In this study, we compared the fish communities of two intermittent and two perennial adventitious tributaries to the Kings River. Linear mixed effects models found similar species richness, Shannon's Diversity Index, and percent Dominance across all four tributaries. There was however a trend for reduced community persistence and stability at intermittent sites driven by loss of species and recolonization during and after seasonal drying. Additionally, non-metric multidimensional scaling was used to determine differences in community composition between flow regimes and indicator species analysis was used to identify species associated with each flow regime. Despite similar richness and diversity, flow regimes were found to have distinct communities and two important groups, benthic riffle fishes and Ozark endemics, were associated with perennial flow regimes. If current projections hold true and perennial habitats become replaced by intermittent habitats regional communities in the Ozarks could experience reductions in populations of benthic riffle fishes and species found nowhere else in the world.
