Sea turtles have long been considered capital breeders, acquiring the energy resources needed to support breeding before their reproductive migration. Recent evidence, however, suggests the possibility of feeding during reproduction. We examined this theory by analyzing plasma metabolite concentrations in female Chelonia mydas nesting in Tortuguero, Costa Rica. I measured plasma concentrations of triglycerides, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and testosterone during the nesting season. Plasma testosterone and triglycerides had lower concentrations at the end of the nesting season compared to the beginning of the season. Testosterone had a positive relationship with triglycerides and a negative relationship with BHB. These trends are consistent with expectations for periods of fasting, indicating that Tortuguero C. mydas are primarily capital breeders. The weak relationship between BHB and testosterone suggests these turtles may opportunistically forage during internesting periods. Knowing where and when these turtles forage is key in determining the most impactful areas to focus conservation efforts.
