Stock enhanced freshwater recreation fisheries are complex socioecological systems that require fisheries managers to balance multiple management objectives to sustainably manage the system. Florida has some of the most well-known freshwater recreational fisheries in the world that contribute substantially to the state's economy. The stock enhancement system in Florida presents a unique opportunity to learn more about and develop methods to support management for such a considerable set of fisheries. First, we investigated whether centrality-to-lifestyle effects angler preferences for stocking and other management actions. We found that centrality does not influence angler preferences in Florida and that largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides floridanus) was anglers' strongly preferred stocked fish over other common species categories that have been stocked in the state for decades. Second, we investigated the potential to utilize stocking across a management landscape to address management objective trade-offs that are exceedingly challenging to accomplish with a single waterbody. Specifically, we focused high catch rates and trophy catch in the largemouth bass fishery. These methods illustrated the use of stocking as a management action to achieve these management objectives across a landscape. Finally, we used the method of optimization to understand how balancing management objectives would identify different hatchery stocking options to achieve those objectives. We found that some options occurred with high frequency that were expected and some unexpected, while simultaneously discovering that outputs from more heavily weight angler and manager values reveal limited overlap in optimized stocking items. Overall, with socioecological systems, particularly stock enhanced freshwater recreational fisheries, we find that an interdisciplinary approach to research and management helps identify information and management strategies that support transparent decisions and managers in their decision-making process for the long-term use and enjoyment of the resource.
