Heavy metal ions (HMI) are a relevant analyte in the environment. Two such ions, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are highly toxic products of acid mine drainage and industrial pollution that can negatively affect waterways, agriculture, and human health. Another HMI, copper (Cu), is essential to both plants and humans in small amounts, but toxic in large amounts. This work details the development of a novel sensor for the electrochemical detection of these analytes in three parts: first, the electrodeposition of a metal oxide on a flexible carbon cloth substrate for use in the simultaneous detection of three biomolecules; second, the optimization and calibration of a one-step electrodeposited electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) for use in the simultaneous detection of HMI; and third, the combination of ERGO and carbon cloth to form a novel, inexpensive, sensitive, and robust sensor for the individual and simultaneous detection of HMI in real samples including water, fertilizer, soil, and plant matter. The carbon cloth substrate modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) was able to resolve signals from ascorbic acid, epinephrine, and uric acid and exhibited excellent sensitivity and detection limits. The ERGO was synthesized directly from dissolved graphene oxide via cyclic voltammetry and could be tuned to optimum sensitivity for the desired HMI by changing the number of cycles. The graphene oxide and ERGO materials were verified by UV-Vis spectrometry, XRD, XPS, and EIS. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry was used to detect the HMI, determine the limits of detection for the analytes, and test sensor performance in the presence of real sample matrices and potentially interfering ions. The results show that our sensors are robust, reliable, and able to detect Cd, Pb, and Cu below the EPA limits for those metals in water.
