Restorative justice has become a common response to addressing juvenile delinquency in various countries due to its effectiveness in reducing rates of recidivism and re-incarceration (Okada, 2011). A few aims of this intervention are to repair relationships, increase empathy, and hold offenders accountable for their crimes (Bergseth & Bouffard, 2012). The framework for this intervention involves negotiation, mediation, and building relationships while refraining from the retributive approach that our current justice system follows (Johnstone, 2013, p. 33-34). Unfortunately, the limitations across restorative justice studies are that not one of them involves the Hmong juvenile community. Due to this, it is difficult to know how effective restorative justice interventions are within the Hmong juvenile community. The present study explored the lived experiences of Hmong adults and their contact with the juvenile justice system as a youth. The primary research questions are: What are the processes that influence Hmong adults to engage in risk-taking behaviors, as well as in restorative justice interventions as youth? How might racial and social encounters contribute to these processes? Eight Hmong Americans participated in semi-structured interviews for this study. The study utilized a grounded theory qualitative approach to data collection and analysis. The results are understood to have a pattern of connections that influence, impact, or show an understanding of the Hmong juvenile experience. The participants' narratives portrayed the influence of systemic violence, acculturative stress, lack of guidance, and familial expectations on risk-taking behaviors. Additionally, it portrayed the importance of having healthy social connections and developing values that may assist in deterring Hmong youth from the juvenile justice system.
