Approximately 50% of the solid waste in the United States is disposed of in landfills. As such, landfill design and operation are important to protect human health and the environment. This dissertation investigates alternative landfill designs to reduce leachate generation, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost, and studies the impact of contaminants leaving the landfill or mobilized by the landfill.Current landfill designs were compared to alternative proposed designs. The traditional landfill generated less leachate (1.01x109 L), was the least expensive ($12.75 per Mg of waste), and had the lowest greenhouse gas emissions (49.9 kg of CO2 per Mg of waste) compared to the alternative models. For the hybrid and gravity designs to become feasible, the traditional design would need to operate 40 years longer into post-closure care than the alternatives.The second research item examined the impact that landfill cell construction has on the mobilization of naturally occurring mercury at a landfill in northern Florida. The mercury impacted wells were associated with new cell construction. Spearman's rho analysis revealed a significant two-tailed correlation between mercury and redox potential in the groundwater13(p<0.01). Leaching tests supported the hypothesis that more mercury is leached from soil under oxidizing conditions than reducing conditions.Landfill gas condensate and gas well pump-out from three MSW landfills underwent physical-chemical characterization and PFAS analysis. Notably, arsenic and antimony were found in concentrations exceeding regulatory thresholds by over two orders of magnitude in many gas condensate samples. Gas condensate contained a lower average concentration of ΣPFAS (19,000 ng L) compared to GWP (56,000 ng L); however, gas condensate contained more diversity of PFAS, with 53 quantified compared to 44 in gas well pump-out.Metals in landfill gas were measured, with As (1.06 mg m-3) and Sb (0.99 mg m-3) notably high in concentration. The mobility of metals was assessed, and As and Sb are mostly mobilized in the gas phase, while Na and K are mobilized in leachate. Leaching tests reaffirmed that the TCLP underestimates the leaching potential of As and Sb compared to leaching with leachate from an MSW landfill.
