Between the accommodation of social mobility among the laity and the inclusion of communion ecclesiology alongside societas perfectas, the 1983 Code released the laity, in their parish communities and marriages, from various restrictions present in the 1917 Code. We will examine the history of some of these restrictions, how they were already being changed leading up to the 1983 Code, and how those restrictions provided or still provide for at least legal certainty in communities.
