This dissertation studies China's role in the capitalist world-economy in the past three decades.Chapter 1 summarizes the three research pieces of this dissertation and proposes a conceptual framework following the world-systems tradition.Chapter 2 studies how China's participation in global value chains reduced its aggregate manufacturing labor share from 1998 to 2007. A new explanation is proposed: first, the power asymmetry between lead firms from advanced countries and suppliers from developing countries gives rise to supplier squeezes that push up labor shares of the latter; second, the survival of export-reliant suppliers critically depends on low wage costs, which can be brought about through weaker labor protections; third, local governments competing for mobile capital have the incentive to weaken labor protections so as to promote and accommodate export-reliant activities, which in turn lowers wages and labor shares for all firms. Consequently, the expansion of export-reliant suppliers is accompanied by the fall of the aggregate manufacturing labor share. Five empirical findings based on China's manufacturing firm-level data are presented, consistent with the new explanation.Chapter 3 studies the core/periphery hierarchy of the capitalist world-economy. The central and novel argument is that the network of international labor time flows reveals the core/periphery hierarchy of the world-economy. Based on the analysis of the labor time network of forty economies from the world input-output table, I find that the core/periphery structure of the world-economy in large part remained unaltered between 1995 and 2009. Through regression analysis, I find that the per capita income of a country is strongly associated with its command over global labor time. The regression analysis also lends evidence to the "oligarchic wealth" hypothesis: the struggle of a country to improve its position in the capitalist world-economy tends to put downward pressure on the income of other countries.Chapter 4 studies the U.S.-China technology war. I argue that it is imperative for China to upgrade its economy since intercapitalist competition has intensified and workers' bargaining power has risen over the past decade in China, but this effort inevitably conflicts with U.S. interests in maintaining the technology leadership.
