The Ming dramatist Tang Xianzu was cultivated as a writer of the eight-legged essay since he was a child. The mechanical composition method of the eight-legged essay enabled him to ponder from multiple angles and indirectly influenced the writing of his chuanqi dramas. This dissertation considers Tang's eight-legged essays as the lens of rereading his dramas. It aims to contextualize Tang's thought and literary ideas and reveal the dramatic consciousness embedded in his eight-legged essays. Also, this research re-examines the ideological and artistic values of The Purple Flute and the "Four Dreams of Linchuan" by identifying the mutual characteristics of Tang's eight-legged essays and dramas.This thesis is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter is the Introduction. Focusing on five pieces of Tang's examination essays, the second chapter examines the newly discovered versions of his essays. It expounds on how Tang shows his independent thinking under the strict norms of writing the eight-legged essay. Chapter Three draws readers' attention to Tang's non-examination eight-legged essays and categorizes them by creating periods and literary styles. This chapter extracts "Six Dynasties" as a historical and cultural slice and traces the juvenile Tang Xianzu's knowledge-construction process. It also elaborates on how Tang learned and transformed the Six Dynasties literature features into his eight-legged essays and how he left room for expressing his spirit and sentiments. The fourth chapter borrows the musical term "polytony" to analyse how Tang portrayed characters in his eight-legged essays. It also investigates how the idea of "polytony" affects the portrayals and character arrangements in Tang's dramas. The fifth chapter cites introductory monologues found in Tang's dramas as examples with which to scrutinize the evolution of Tang's writing style. Introducing the concept of "hidden elegance" reveals that Tang creates introductory monologues through the eight-legged structure. This is the key to engaging his reader and audience from various social statuses. Chapter Six traces the construction of Tang's time-consciousness in his eight-legged essays. It then considers The Purple Flute as the axis of study. It interprets how time becomes a key role in expressing the sentiments in Tang's dramas. This chapter also reinvestigates the ideological and artistic values of The Purple Flute and the "Four Dreams of Linchuan". The last chapter is the Conclusion.
