From 1966 until 1976, the People's Republic of China was engaged in one of the boldest social experiments ever attempted--one that sought to consciously direct the course of modernization through the creation of a new culture. The ultimate goal of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was to create a new social reality based upon the altruism and voluntarism embodied in Mao Zedong's ethic of serving the people. Culture was to be the focus of attack because it provides the parameters of social reality. Contained within culture are the beliefs, values, and customs a people have. Hence, changing culture can change the way people think which, in turn, affects their conception of reality. By changing reality, Mao believed that the road to modernization could be changed as well. However, with China taking the "capitalist road" to modernization and having a "feudal" tradition, the Cultural Revolution meant a simultaneous attack upon China's leadership of the present and her heritage of the past--the old ideas, customs, habits, and culture of the "Four Olds." The effects of the Cultural Revolution reverberated throughout Chinese society. Since workers, along with peasants and soldiers, were to be the vanguard of the revolution, profound changes were instituted in the workplace. Simultaneously, the schools were attacked because they perpetuate the social relationships represented by the status quo. These changes, in turn, affected the interactions that people encounter on a daily basis. As a total assault on culture, any lasting effects of the Cultural Revolution should be seen in these areas. However, as a revolution, the Cultural Revolution only provided the rituals of humiliation that successfully called the old culture into question. Since it failed to produce the requisite rituals of integration for the creation of the envisioned proletarian reality, anomie resulted. Consequently, the impressions that remain of the Cultural Revolution focus not on its goals, but rather, on the destruction and chaos it engendered.
