The Kojima hypothesis states that U.S. and Japanese direct foreign investments (DFI) in less developed countries differ in motivation and produce different effects in both the investing and host countries. American-type DFI occurs as a result of profit-maximizing behavior on the part of the firm. Japanese-type DFI represents not only profit-maximizing firm behavior, but also strong macrolevel motives. Japanese DFI complements the comparative advantage positions of both the investing and host countries and is trade-oriented. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of Japanese and U.S. DFI on trade and output in Colombia and Brazil. Test of the Kojima hypothesis have focused on Southeast Asian host countries. The time period of the study was 1971-1988. Three models were estimated for each dependent variable in each host country. The aggregate model included domestic investment and total DFI as independent variables. The two-component model disaggregated total DFI into Japanese plus U.S. DFI and Other DFI. The three-component model separated DFI into Japanese DFI, U.S. DFI, and Other DFI. Chow F tests were used to test whether disaggregation was meaningful. Coefficients on DFI variables were then examined for evidence of a more beneficial effect from Japanese DFI. The results offered no support for Kojima's assertions.
