As a Chinese student studying graphic design in the United States, I have unique knowledge and insight into two different cultures. In China, more and more people want to see traditional Chinese art and design used, whether it is through photography, print advertising, or digital media. The traditional designs becoming popular now are basically Asian culture presented to Asian groups. I wanted to use traditional Chinese painting to blend my two cultures, but in a contemporary way, through graphic design. In this thesis, I studied five famous brush painting artists from Chinese art history and created six digital brush paintings using subjects significant to me during my stay in Mississippi. Inspired by the spiritual approaches of the Chinese masters, these paintings embody my life in these two cultures.
