Small businesses are a significant entity to the national community of business enterprises and a vital part of their country's gross domestic product (G.D.P.) at virtually every economic progress, development, and efficiency level. The Small Business Association (2018) Office of Advocacy stated that small business statistics had increased tremendously. However, only a tiny fraction of them survive to pass their first five years, and one-third endure ten years or longer. Some of these businesses lack the strategy for obtaining the operational sustainability of their organization. Small businesses in the architectural and engineering industry have continuously faced challenges that affect their business operational sustainability. This qualitative case study explored the small business challenges and their implemented structures related to business operational sustainability within the architectural and engineering industry. The questions addressed in this study were: What strategies are currently utilized by SJ to ensure the operational sustainability of their small business, and what methods can be implemented to improve the operational sustainability? Specific systems of business operations are essential for business operational sustainability. The foundation of the literature review reinforced former research findings in procurement business operational sustainability. A qualitative research methodology was practically utilized for this case study. This study incorporated online leadership questionnaires, surveys, and interviews to accumulate relevant and appropriate data. To ensure the viability of the study, the population consists of current employees of SJ. The data collection instruments were provided to three groups of employees: architects, engineers, and administrative services to the organizational customer. The first groups of participants were distinguished by their managerial, supervisory, and ownership responsibilities. The second group of participants consists of employees who do not have administrative, supervisory, or ownership responsibilities. The third group of participants in the study was distinguished by their managerial, supervisory, and ownership responsibilities. The sample population included nineteen participants for SJ. Seven participants completed instrument 1, six completed instrument 2, and six completed instrument 3. Survey Monkey was used for the leadership questionnaires, and the employee survey and Dedoose were used to support the thematic analysis process of identifying codes and themes. The interviews were conducted on Microsoft Teams and transcribed using Otter Voice and Dedoose to support the thematic analysis process of identifying codes and themes. All data was incorporated together for triangulation. Schumpeter's Entrepreneurship Theory of Economic Development, Stakeholders Theory and Resource-Based View of the firm (RBV) were utilized for this study. The findings and recommendations included leadership engagement, employee engagement, and leadership explanation of its strategic plans to all employees. Future research can replicate this study to find alternative strategies for this firm's operational sustainability. Other researchers could also help organizations see that their employees and leaders want the same stability and are within reach.
