This qualitative inquiry study aimed to explore the perspectives of technology SME executives within the United States regarding the strategies that improve idea generation at the front end of innovation. Sustaining continuous innovation is critical to ensuring a company's long-term success. However, there is a gap in the present literature on the strategies leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises use as they strive to achieve this. The present study sought insight into the perspectives of technology SME executives on the strategies that improve idea generation at the front end of innovation. The study uses a generic qualitative inquiry methodology to investigate the research questions, using interviews as the primary data source. The target population was executives who had served on a technology services SME's senior management/leadership team and possessed relevant and recent experience with innovation initiatives within their organizations. The researcher transcribed and coded interview data to identify common themes and generate meaning. The primary data analysis resulted in an idea map demonstrating the significant themes and subthemes identified. These themes included executive leader awareness of emerging technology concepts such as open innovation, radical innovation, lab mechanisms (i.e., idea, innovation, and living), organizational leader contributions to the idea generation process, and the tools used by executive leaders to create ideas at the front end of innovation. The study adds to the current literature on idea generation, open innovation, and SME executive leadership. The study demonstrates that organizational leaders have a wide range of informal idea generation tools available to their organizations to create new ideas at the front end of innovation; however, very few have formal structures and strategies.
