The purpose of this research was to identify how employers surveil their remote workers, examine the impacts of surveillance on employee privacy and company cybersecurity, and propose alternatives that do not violate employee trust nor weaken infrastructure security. This paper informed employers of the privacy pitfalls and cybersecurity issues surrounding remote work and employee surveillance software. The following research questions guided this study of employer surveillance of remote workers: How does employee surveillance impact employee privacy and corporate security? What is appropriate and reasonable for employers to monitor and why? How can employers track employee work while upholding privacy and strengthening security? The key findings in this research are that employee monitoring should be limited to what is necessary for business purposes, employee monitoring should be privacy-focused, and that employee monitoring should include cybersecurity measures to protect corporate and employee data. Furthermore, monitoring software introduces privacy and security risks that are outside of the employer's control when using third-party tools. Thus, employers should avoid mass data collection and choose less invasive forms of monitoring if monitoring employees.
