Existing studies suggest that education spending is correlated with illiteracy rates, but few studies of this topic focus on China. Using data from China's 31 provinces over the period 2009 to 2018. I estimate the relationship between government funding for education and illiteracy rates at the province level among people aged 15 and older. My results suggest that there is no significant correlation between government spending on education and illiteracy rates among the target population.
