This research-based demonstration of professional competence developed alongside an emergent conversation in placemaking theory, research, and practice surrounding what a trauma-informed or healing-centered approach to placemaking might look like. This project responds to increasingly asked questions in the placemaking field: what is the role of placemakers in helping communities heal from place-based trauma? More specifically, how can placemaking that centers people's bodies help communities reclaim traumatized places? To understand healing from trauma, I argue that one first must acknowledge the interconnectedness of the body and trauma. I hypothesize that placemaking that focuses on the body's relationship to place can play a critical role in healing communities and places. This project synthesizes research from various fields on trauma, place, healing, and the body to explore the potential of "embodied placemaking" in collective healing from place-based trauma. Through a transdisciplinary literature search, expert interviews, and community-led precedent studies, findings emphasize the potential of embodied placemaking to foster healing at many scales and highlight the need for a culture shift in placemaking education and practice.
