Slow tourism is an emerging form of alternative tourism that promotes a slower pace, local indulgence (food, products, wine), and meaningful engagement (cultural, historical, natural) with the destination. Despite existing discussions, understanding tourists' perspectives on slow tourism remains limited. This study addressed this gap by developing a measurement scale to effectively capture tourists' slow tourism experiences. Additionally, it examined the relationship between slow tourism experiences, self-perceived health, life satisfaction, and overall quality of life (QOL) using the Bottom-up spillover theory (BST). To achieve the objectives, a comprehensive review of the literature and interviews with tourists in Sonoma, California, was conducted to generate constructs/themes and initial items for the scale. Survey questionnaires were distributed on the Facebook Groups related to Sonoma, Sonoma Wine, and Sonoma Food. 2,250 valid questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) purified the scale items, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were used to examine the relationships between variables. The findings indicated that tourists' slow tourism experiences significantly influenced their mental, physical, and social health, as well as overall QOL. Mental health positively and significantly impacted QOL, whereas physical and social health did not significantly impact QOL. The study theoretically contributed to slow tourism and tourism experience literature and provides practical implications for tourism providers aiming to enhance tourist experiences through slow tourism. This study extended the understanding of how slow tourism impacted tourists' health, life satisfaction, and QOL. Future research can build on these findings to further deepen knowledge of tourism experience.
