Using computational methods has allowed researchers to uncover patterns and in-sights that were previously impossible to identify, leading to discoveries and a deeper understanding of social phenomena (Lazer et al. 2009). Despite the benefits of computational methods and its many applications, it is essential to ensure that the right data is used properly with active `human intervention? by the researcher. This dissertation acts as a guide to social scientists looking to conduct research with computational methods. In the first chapter, I identify and explain the different types of biases that are common when using computational methods. I provide a checklist that researchers can follow to prevent wrong uses of computational methods, especially in using machine learning algorithms. In the second chapter, I invite qualitative researchers to use computational methods for coding qualitative data. Using text as data, qualitative researchers can benefit from computational methods to expand the scope of their research at fast speeds. In the last chapter, I replicate a study done using computational methods and go through the checklist introduced in Chapter 1. All of the chapters are accompanied by simulations, example use cases, and suggestions for the successful use of computational methods in social science research. Computational methods have the potential to significantly change the way researchers conduct research. However, the development of methods and technology should not be left to computer scientists and engineers alone. Social scientists need to use it and provide feedback to ensure that advances in computational methods are going in the right direction. With this dissertation, I hope to encourage more social scientists to use computational methods for their research.
