Infant morbidity and mortality rates are direct indicators of the overall health of a society and provide insight into maternal and infant health status before, during, and after pregnancy. The U.S. ranks 33rd out of 36 developed countries, with an infant mortality rate of 5.8 deaths per 1,000 live births. One explanation for such high rates of infant mortality is due to women entering pregnancy while in suboptimal health. In recent years, there has been increasing recognition that a woman's health status prior to pregnancy will subsequently affect not only the mother but also her child. Preconception care is a solution that focuses on optimizing a woman's health prior to pregnancy by identifying and modifying risk factors that have the potential to affect pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, despite the known positive outcomes that preconception care has on pregnancy, many women are unaware of what preconception care is and subsequently do not seek preconception care services. This practice improvement project included educational sessions focused on providing information about preconception care and assessed knowledge, attitudes, and health intentions of women through a set of pre-and post-intervention questionnaires. Women that attended the educational sessions received information about the main components of preconception care including teratogenic medications, immunizations, infectious disease screening, healthy body weight, folic acid intake, substance use, and chronic disease management. Upon completion of the educational sessions, the data of each participant was analyzed. Prior to education, the questionnaires identified that women had a low baseline knowledge regarding several main preconception care components. However, following education, the questionnaires determined that education about preconception care increased participants' knowledge of preconception care components, promoted positive attitudes, and increased intentions to seek preconception care before pregnancy. The project was overall successful, and all objectives were subsequently met, but the project results reflect the need for future interventions that address poor preconception care awareness, knowledge, and utilization of preconception care services among women of reproductive age.
