The present study examines the extent to which the contribution of parental well-being to problematic child behavior can be explained by parent and child screen usage. Caregivers of preschoolers (N = 171) completed an online survey on their psychological well-being, screen usage, child behavior, and experiences during the pandemic. Mediation results showed that parental depression indirectly influenced child internalizing and externalizing behaviors through its effect on child screen usage, not parents'. In addition, parent screen usage was unrelated to their depression or child adjustment levels. More research is needed to clarify the direct and indirect impact of screens on child development.
