While there is an extensive amount of research examining characteristics of murder-suicide perpetrators, there is limited research examining a theoretical explanation for why murder-suicides occur. A more recent classification system for understanding murder-suicide was developed by Joiner (2014), which posits that murder-suicide occurs when the perpetrator is suicidal and experiences a distortion of at least one of four interpersonal virtues: mercy, justice, duty, and glory. This study aimed to examine Joiner's (2014) perversion of virtue theory by utilizing narratives and data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). Narratives from murder-suicide incidents in the NVDRS from 2015-2018 (n = 1,655) were consensus coded using the coding scheme developed by Adhia et al. (2019), with additional definitions and descriptions added by the primary investigator. This study found that perversions of justice and mercy were the most common motives compared to other perversions of virtue (i.e., duty, self-control, fate). Regarding demographics, results showed that murder-suicide perpetrators were more likely to be men than women and non-Hispanic White than non-White. Additionally, perpetrators of perversion of mercy and duty were found to be of older age (> 50 years), while perpetrators of justice were found to be of younger age (< 50 years). For victim-perpetrator relationship, victims of perversion of justice and duty were more likely to be current or former intimate partners than other types of relationships. Lastly, perversion of mercy incidents were more likely to involve the killing of children (i.e., filicide). Identifying and understanding risk factors and motives for murder-suicide has important implications for the prevention of murder-suicide.
