The ability to store growing quantities of data efficiently is an exponential challenge to global data usage. Using deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) approaches to create a different way of storing and managing data over a long period is one possible solution; however, such a technique comes with accompanying cybersecurity risks. The purpose of the generic qualitative inquiry research was to explore the cybersecurity risks within the newly defined DNA data storage technique. The conceptual framework diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory was used in conjunction with the operationally critical threat, asset, and vulnerability evaluation (OCTAVE) framework. Semistructured interviews collected data from 13 participants with roles as software engineer, data center technician, research scientist, product manager, chief technology officer, cybersecurity manager, biological scientist, information technology specialist, automation architect, information security engineer, network engineer, and research specialist. Data were analyzed using NVivo v.12, leading to the emergence of eight themes: (a) malicious attacks will evolve, giving rise to the emergent field of biocybersecurity; (b) AI revolutionizes cyberattacks in an accelerated process; (c) comprehensive data lifecycle and secure data disposal practices are necessary to reduce risks; (d) transition to DNA data storage presents cybersecurity risks; (e) data management risks and challenges in governance, ethics, privacy, and the need for comprehensive access control; (f) errors, synthesis challenges, environmental considerations, and the associated risks related to the chemical processes in DNA data storage; (g) develop a comprehensive infrastructure strategy to address human and technical factors against physical and cybersecurity threats; and (h) perceived cybersecurity risks have not significantly influenced the adoption of DNA data storage, indicating that it does not serve as a deterrent. The results indicated that perceived cybersecurity risks might not significantly hinder the adoption of DNA data storage. The key findings suggest a holistic risk management approach in DNA data storage and regulatory compliance is needed. The research concluded that biocybersecurity would emerge and AI would accelerate attacks. Future research should be considered for each key theme explored in this study.
