Renewable energy production has grown rapidly in recent years and now makes up over 25% of the global energy market. A critical policy consideration is the question of how the transition to renewable energy may impact a country's economy. Previous studies have found evidence of a relationship between renewable energy production and economic growth; however, the directionality and significance of these findings is mixed, inconsistent, and dated. My paper contributes to the literature by using annual country-level data from the World Bank World Development Indicators, the U.S. Energy Information Agency, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the International Labor Organization to investigate the relationship between renewable energy production and economic growth at the country level between 2005 and 2020. My results suggest that there is no significant relationship between renewable energy generation and economic growth within my sample as a whole. I also find that these variables are negatively related in High Import countries, but are positively related in Upper Middle Income and Low Income countries.
