The adoption of virtual reality (VR) technology has been hindered by the need for high-bandwidth and low-latency networks to provide immersive experiences. Existing solutions have not been able to fully address the challenges with respect to the bandwidth and latency requirements. The head-mounted devices used in VR are still heavy and not portable hence, limiting the potential of VR applications in various contexts. In this work, we propose EdgeVerse, a multi-user VR system that leverages edge computing to offload computation, thereby reducing the reliance on high-bandwidth networks and enabling VR in remote or offline locations. Our approach allows for lightweight client systems, such as devices with an edge browser, making VR more accessible to users. The key design of EdgeVerse focuses on handling the connection and network synchronization of multiple VR users at the edge to enhance user interaction, responsiveness, and immersive experience. To establish the practicality of our approach, we implemented a prototype and present evaluation results that indicate improved response times and reduced latency. Our work opens up more research directions, as we point out in our conclusion, and has the potential to contribute to the widespread adoption and accessibility of VR technologies.
