In this dissertation, I use a variety of government survey and administrative data and econometric techniques such as instrumental variables and difference-in-differences estimation to provide evidence for how migration, labor markets, and public policy interact with one another. Chapter 1 shows that emigration in the Philippines raises wages of workers similar to migrants in skills, and province-level emigration leads to increases in wages of high education workers and decreases in wages of low education workers within the province. Chapter 2 uses job-to-job flow administrative data to show that decreases in geographic variation of job opportunity and increases in geographic variation of housing costs can explain a large portion of the long-term decline in internal migration in the U.S. Chapter 3 shows that members of U.S. households with noncitizens reduce their use of public benefits in response to changes in public charge rules. I show this using a 2018 announcement changing public charge rules which led to a 1.5 percentage point decrease of Medicaid by members of households with noncitizens, which was concentrated among children whose use was exempt from the rule.
