The current study focuses on the effects of market transparencies on consumers' perceived value of information as a means to promote consumption of reliable information. While studies in the field of transparency mostly focus on consumer goods, it seems that transparency in information markets is taken as a given, probably because most markets are digital and inherently offer data and metadata. However, the special nature of information as experience good raises questions regarding the assumption of transparency.Information goods have two key special characteristics: they are, by definition, experience goods and they are often given away for free. Before experiencing information products, a consumer knows: the price (zero or else), partial content, and metadata such as author, etc. Information consumers do not know the actual value to them for their needs and expectations. The full evaluation of the information good is only revealed after actual use. Since information goods are non-rival, duplication at zero cost often occurs regardless of production costs. The result is in a tendency for pricing to often be set at zero, explaining why information is freely available. Focusing on the special case of transparency in information markets may offer relief to both challenges raised here: information as experience good and the abundance of free information.Based on prior research in the field of marketing, the study details three specific market good transparencies - cost, operational, and price transparencies. These transparencies are tested in an experimental information market environment to examine their effect on perceived value in the special case of information goods. Perceived value is assessed by willingness-topay (WTP) as a form of value perception.The research method is a controlled experiment with 210 participants (age 25-75) divided into 6 experimental groups and a control group. Six groups are needed because transparency is examined separately for the case when information requires payment and for the case when information is free. The experiment setup includes preliminary questions, a visual vignette and two research questions: (1) will you download the app? (2) how much will you be willing to pay for the app? The entire setup is delivered to the participants via the Qualtrics system. Forms of transparency are manipulated via the visual vignette and each manipulation is presented to a new group of participants to avoid dependence.The method of analysis includes t-tests for independent samples compared the manipulation groups to the control group. In order to assess whether transparency effects the rate of transactions, I refer to the decision to download the app and perform a binary regression.The first three groups were exposed to each transparency form when price is not known. The results reveal that the difference between the group exposed to cost transparency and the control group is not statistically significant, however, it produces the highest average WTP compared to the control group and the other two experimental groups. Cost transparency also increases the likelihood of downloading the health app by +140% compared to other transparencies. Overall, when cost transparency is observed, participants are willing to pay the highest price (ns) and are more likely to download the app establishing that cost transparency increases value perception.
