Helping careers and those who volunteer with traumatized populations can be emotionally demanding and can come with the cost of experiencing burnout (Freudenberger, 1974). While burnout is highly researched in this field (Freudenberger, 1974; Kim et al., 2018; O'Connor et al., 2018a; Rotstein et al., 2019; Simionato & Simpson, 2018), there are gaps in the literature for providers who work with human sex trafficking survivors (HSTS) (Kliner & Stroud, 2012). The current study was designed to determine if role stress, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction are predictors of burnout for HSTS providers to address the gap in the literature. This relationship was analyzed in a sample of 58 helpers through survey monkey, using multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that the overall model predicted 39.1% of the variance and was a significant predictor of burnout (F (4,50) = 9.677, p < .0001, with an Adj. R2 = 0.391). A significant effect was found only with compassion fatigue (t = 4.95, p <.001) as a predictor of burnout. Implications of this study include that compassion fatigue can result in high levels of burnout. Additional research is warranted to understand further the variables that lead to burnout within providers who work with HSTS.
