Charleston is a significant city in southern labor relations as the business practice of laundry work showcases the intertwined race relations and competition. Chinese laundry owners were in direct competition with all races throughout the city, thereby challenging police, lawmakers, and government officials to enforce the Black and white binary of Jim Crow laws in the South. The case study on Chinese laundry workers in Charleston sheds light on the segregation and legacy of slavery that influenced race and labor relations. Chinese Charlestonians reveal a hidden narrative of laundry work in Charleston and how it is just one of many small cities with similar histories.
