The school-to-prison pipeline is a complex phenomenon that perpetuates exclusionary discipline practices in childhood and adolescence and increases the likelihood of future involvement in the criminal justice system. This analytic study examined the impact of early childhood and elementary exclusionary practices, including in-school and out-of-school suspensions and expulsions, on students' involvement in the juvenile justice system. A systematic review of the existing literature was conducted to summarize and analyze the data pertaining to exclusionary practices and the short-term and long-term outcomes for students on the school-to-prison pipeline trajectory. Current studies do not conclude a direct correlation between elementary suspension and adolescent juvenile justice involvement, but rather identify the negative academic, social, and behavioral outcomes that indirectly link childhood exclusion to future arrest.
