The field of psychology has identified children's sensitivities to the impact of early adversity. Stressors such as maltreatment can change the child's developmental trajectory to adapt to their environment. Dissociative experiences represent one of the significant outcomes of childhood adversity. This study aimed to address these various perspectives and arguments in hopes of clarifying this unique phenomenon through a deep dive into past literature. Secondly, this quantitative research follows an analytical cross-sectional design that examines the relationship between childhood maltreatment type (no maltreatment, passive perpetration, active perpetration, extreme perpetration) and dissociation in adulthood. Two surveys were administered through Qualtrics to each of the 202 participants over the span of 4 months. Information was gathered about their childhoods and current symptoms of dissociation (DES-II). Using stratified sampling, the participants were split into groups to answer two research questions. First, they were split into three groups of childhood maltreatment types based on the experiences they endorsed on the demographic survey. Second, the participants chose their own grouping based on which category of maltreatment type they believed most accurately described their childhood experiences. Regarding the former, findings show that the more severe the maltreatment type, the higher the dissociation score is in adulthood [H (2 = 58.961, p < .001); rsp (202) = .536, p < .001]. To the latter, when the individual perceives their maltreatment type to be more severe, the higher the dissociative symptoms are in adulthood [H (2 = 45.908, p < .001); rsp (202) = .459, p < .001].
