By the beginning of the 21st century, adversaries and cyber threats were causing cyber risk to grow as quickly as digital technologies emerged in cyberspace. Early adopters of cyber technologies, including banks, had to also deal with the increased threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences of cyber risk. A significant challenge to U.S. banks in the reduction of cyber risk is the lack of information about both the transfer of financial risks from cyber incidents through the purchase of insurance products and operational cyber risk mitigation programs and activities. The purpose of this study was to examine what relationships exist between the purchase of cyber insurance and the enhancement of operational cyber risk mitigation programs and activities in large U.S. banks. The banks that participated in this study were large New Jersey banks with over $1 billion in total assets. The research outcome of this study has demonstrated for the first time using empirical data that relationships do exist between the purchasing of some types of cyber insurance and the enhancement of some operational cyber risk mitigation programs and activities in large banks in the state of New Jersey. The research outcome of this study has also demonstrated which relationships between the purchase of cyber insurance and the enhancement of operational cyber risk mitigation in large banks in the state of New Jersey have very strong correlations and which ones do not.
