The purpose of the research was to explore the lived experiences of service-disabled veteran women's transition from military to civilian living and their motivations to pursue entrepreneurship. The problem addressed in this study is the growing unemployment rates among veteran women with service-connected medical conditions (NAVSO, 2019). Research is guided by the theoretical framework of McClelland's Achievement Motivation Theory, also known as the Acquired Needs Theory. Renowned psychologist David McClelland developed the concept based on motivation and triangulated it with an individual's needs (Rosiana, 2021). The research was conducted utilizing a qualitative phenomenology design. Qualitative research allows inquiring into the lived experience of the respondents with a focus on the meaning as reported by the individual (Tarnoki & Puentes, 2019). The phenomenology design focuses on personal knowledge to understand the experiences and acknowledge the participants' perspectives (Neubauer et al., 2019). The research sample size consisted of 12 service-disabled veteran women entrepreneurs. The data analysis consisted of a survey with semi-structured open-ended questions. Motivational factors, entrepreneurial barriers, and available resources emerged as themes concerning participants' lived experiences. Broadening the study by increasing the number of participants, evaluating the outcomes, and collecting annual surveys to document any status changes to intrinsic and extrinsic motivators would benefit agencies, businesses, and organizations. Further research is recommended because the past studies of Mclelland's theory limit the motivational needs to three categories: achievement, affiliation, and power. Results suggest additional research will enable ongoing dialogue of women's motivating factors, particularly regarding culture, family, and work-life balance.
