This study is an inquiry into the experiences of African American women seeking C-Suite positions. The purpose was to examine barriers African American women encounter. The research problem was the lack of African American female representation in top executive leadership positions. The theoretical framework used was the matrix of domination. The qualitative research methodology, autoethnographic design, and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis approach were used. Three African American women were included in the study; all were employed at the same company for at least 20 years and held leadership positions below the executive leadership level. The research question: What are the collective barriers African American women in leadership positions face when trying to reach executive leadership positions in the south? Eight themes were developed from the data, and findings revealed experiences and impacts of limited representation of African American female leadership examples in the early years of the participants' lives. The study participants were disadvantaged by non-inclusive networking circles, unequal executive sponsorship, and the inability to apply and compete for early leadership positions equally. Implications of limited representation of African American women have reduced ability to attract and retain African American female employees due to non-inclusive development and sponsorship programs, restrictive recruiting practices, and limited recognition of African American female value because they do not self-promote. Negative stereotypes still impact advocacy for African American women. Recommendations for businesses are to reform recruiting practices, create intentional avenues to increase inclusion for African American women in growth assignments and promotions and form proactive sponsorship programs that respond to the personal limitations rooted in the African American culture.
