This qualitative study delves into the intercultural communication experiences of second- generation Vietnamese Americans, specifically within the context of Southern California, and examines the implications for couple and family therapy. Anchored by the lived experiences of ten participants, this research employed a transcendental phenomenological approach to uncover how bicultural identities were navigated in participants' cross-cultural interactions, and the subsequent influence of being second generation immigrants on identity development. Guided by Moustakas' methods, in-depth interviews revealed pivotal themes related to cultural values, second-generation cultural identity, and intercultural communication dynamics. These themes are particularly salient in understanding the familial and relational contexts in which second- generation Vietnamese Americans operate, providing insights into the challenges and resilience mechanisms pertinent to family therapy. The study's findings underscore the importance of cultural competence in therapeutic settings. While the research can offer in-depth local perspectives, it acknowledges the limitation in transferability due to its regional focus on participants that lived in an area where they had access to Vietnamese cultural enclaves. For practitioners in couples and family therapy, this study may enhance the understanding of bicultural identity negotiation and the multifaceted role of communication in familial dynamics among Vietnamese American populations. Culturally informed clinical considerations for couple and family therapists that consider the complexities of navigating multiple cultural realms are also discussed.
