Perceptions of digital media frequently imagine that digital formats, as a progression from print and manuscript, are hardier or otherwise more resistant to the ravages of time. This, however, is an illusion that any number of dead links, images, or lost media online can attest to. Sustaining media in digital formats relies not on the inherent hardiness of the technology, but the communal efforts of preservation-much like the process Walter Ong saw in Oral cultures. Taking Ong's theories of psychodynamics, this dissertation observes how the non-trivial labor of preservation shapes the cultural norms and demands in digital media and how these communal practices shape the practitioners in turn.
