This dissertation presents a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational study that investigates the relationship between an organization's cybersecurity resources budgeting and the risk of insider threats causing cybersecurity breaches. The study was conducted among IT engineers in the United States, utilizing a survey instrument comprising various questions related to cybersecurity budget allocation, perception of effectiveness, and beliefs about the impact of budget allocation on breach likelihood and insider threat actions. Data analysis involved using Pearson's correlation coefficient to examine the relationships between variables. The findings revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between budget allocation and employees' perception of cybersecurity effectiveness, as well as their beliefs regarding the influence of budget allocation on breach likelihood and insider threat activities. However, these correlations were moderate, positive, and weak, suggesting that other factors may contribute to cybersecurity breaches. The study identified critical factors related to prevention mechanisms and cybersecurity practices, emphasizing the significance of budget allocation in mitigating insider threats. Despite its contributions, the study acknowledges limitations, including a relatively small sample size and reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce biases. Future research should address limitations by conducting larger-scale studies with diverse samples and employing objective measures to validate and expand upon the findings. The implications of this research provide valuable insights for practitioners in effectively allocating cybersecurity resources to mitigate insider threats and enhance organizational cybersecurity. Overall, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge and literature by examining the relationship between cybersecurity budget allocation and insider threat risks, offering practice recommendations, and highlighting, areas for future research. By understanding the factors influencing cybersecurity breaches, organizations can make informed decisions to enhance their cybersecurity measures and protect against insider threats.
